Church History

Brother Dale Robinson

became burdened for lost souls on the streets Asheville. Brother Dale and a few Christians started a work in Asheville called “Refuge in the Rock”.

The work began to grow and was relocated to the town of Woodfin in the New Bridge community. Here, Lighthouse Baptist Church was chartered On January 3, 1982. Due to building needs over the next few months the church family found its self without a permanent meeting place, until Brother Calvin Plemmons came forth and offered his home as a meeting place, and the church remained there for a little over five years. In April of I986. The Church called Brother Roy Lee Shepherd to be the church’s second pastor. During his pastoral work, the Church found an available building on Martins Creek in Barnardsville. On April 5, 1987, Lighthouse Baptist Church held its first meeting in the new building on Martins Creek. God truly blessed in those years and in 1989 a new Sunday School building was added on. The Church’s Bible Camp was also started at this time. In February 1992, the Church called brother Terry Bentley to pastor. In November 1994 the Church called Brother James Nelson Ponder. In the years since then, God has greatly blessed Lighthouse Baptist Church. Many souls have been saved. We added a new fellowship building in 1997, which was called the Burleson Family Fellowship Hall in memory of Pearl and Vernon Burleson. In 2001, we fully renovated the Church sanctuary and many other changes have taken place over the years. The parking lot has been paved, vinyl siding has been applied to the building, and a new front porch has been added. A Memorial Garden has also been added where many beautiful flowers were donated in memory of those from the Church family who have passed on, as listed on the plaque in the Church. Some of the best memories have come from Vacation Bible School, Bible Camp, and several mission trips that the church family has participated in. The Church has helped in the building of new Churches in Mexico, Alaska, Idaho, and Oklahoma to name a few. As we reflect back on those early years, as Brother Robinson and those people labored for souls, we can see that God’s hands have always been on the the church. To our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be the glory forever. And all of God’s people say “Amen”.
